Virtu-elles is refreshed!
Want to know what’s up in your town?
www.virtu-elles.org is the rural Outaouais women’s community website and resource network. Founded in 2003 by Louise Mailloux of Réseau Internet Source Collines in Wakefield and funded by Industry Canada and Status of Women Canada, Virtu-elles sprang to life as a website designed to connect women residing in local rural communities.
However, by 2006, our existence as a largely static website was lacking in modern technological pizzazz and ways for community members to actively participate. This year has seen a revamping of the old site onto a platform that is becoming increasingly popular: Drupal, a content management and discussion engine ideal for this ever-changing and dynamic site. Equipped with a useful combination of locally oriented features, Virtu-elles can support websites ranging from personal weblogs to massive business websites and community networks.
Most importantly, it makes Virtu-elles your site because it allows people to easily contribute to Virtu-elles by creating their own, posts, pages, and polls, or by commenting on pieces that have already been posted. With this powerful tool on our side, Virtu-elles has become a friendly and informative cyber meeting spot for community women, whether they are looking for daycares and other resources, wanting to post their business services, or are interested in getting their two-cents in on the latest hot topic in our community and beyond. Chock-full of news items and with fresh content continually being added, Virtu-elles welcomes all writers, digital photos, stories of interest and upcoming events to add to this growing site.
Coordinators Cynthia Rogocki and Timmie Dohn have given rise to this new site, with the technical help of Brent Weatherall, complete with an events calendar, business and municipality listings, pictures by local photographers and plenty of chutzpah. One new tool will feature a Google map of the area with Virtu-elles business members (complete with photo and listing) positioned using GPS (Global Positioning System) software.
All women in the community are more than welcome to come browse, add to and enjoy this great new resource. Training sessions are available to content writers.
